Your Guide to Getting Tattooed: What to Expect from Start to Finish
So, you’ve decided to get tattooed! Whether it’s your first tattoo or your hundredth, there are a few key things to consider to ensure the process goes smoothly and you get the tattoo of your dreams. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your tattoo journey at Black Dahlia.
1. Decide on the Main Element & Placement
The first step is to think about what you want. What’s the main element of your tattoo? Is it a symbol, a design, or an image? Once you’ve got the idea, consider placement—where on your body do you want it, and how big should it be? Measuring the space using inches can help, especially when communicating with your artist.
Tip: Use Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration, but remember, these are just ideas to guide you. Be clear about what you do and don’t want in the design. This will help you and your artist create something perfect.
2. Have a Budget in Mind
Tattoo prices can vary depending on the artist, the design, and the time involved. Some artists charge by the hour, others by the piece. Flash tattoos (pre-drawn designs) are typically priced per piece and often come at a discounted rate.
For reference:
Suz standard rate is $200 per hour
Jay charges $125 per hour
These prices reflect the artists' experience and skill level. Make sure you’re clear on pricing before booking to avoid any surprises.
3. The Booking Process
To book an appointment, start by filling out our inquiry form (link in bio and website). Please note, it may take up to a week to respond as we want to give each inquiry the attention it deserves. Be sure to select the artist you'd like to work with and your inquiry will go directly to that artist.
For smaller tattoos, you'll receive an estimated time for the session. Sometimes getting multiple small tattoos at once can be more economical for you, so feel free to ask about that during your consultation.
For larger pieces, we’ll try to give you an estimate of how many sessions the tattoo may require. We generally don’t go over 4 hours in a single session, but we’ll go over all the details and expectations during your consultation.
4. Consultations: What to Expect
We offer free consultations to all clients. Smaller or flash tattoos might not require one, but if it gives you peace of mind, we're happy to schedule a consultation.
You can book a consultation directly via Suz’s live link in their bio or on our website. These consultations are typically held via Google Meet (mostly in the evenings). However, if you’d prefer to meet in person, just let us know!
During the consultation, we’ll discuss everything you need to know: size, placement, and the realities of tattooing. Our goal is to answer all your questions and make you feel more confident and comfortable before your tattoo appointment.
5. Deposits: What You Need to Know
We require a deposit to secure your appointment. The amount varies depending on the size and type of tattoo:
Suz: $100 for larger pieces, $50 for smaller pieces, no deposit required for flash tattoos.
Jay: $50 for all appointments
Deposits must be paid two weeks before your appointment. The deposit will be deducted from the total cost of your tattoo on the day of the session. Most deposits are paid via Venmo, but if you need to use a different payment method, just let us know, and we’ll make arrangements.
6. Cancellations and Rescheduling
We understand that life happens! If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give us as much notice as possible. Deposits can be transferred to a new appointment as long as we receive at least 24 hours' notice.
Important Note: Please do not come to your appointment if you’re feeling sick. We’re happy to reschedule you for a later date to ensure you’re in the best shape for your session.
